SIMR is a summer internship program for high school juniors and seniors that lasts eight weeks. The program comprises of hands-on research under the direct supervision of a one-on-one mentor in a world-class lab within Stanford University’s Institutes of Medicine as well as chosen departments.
Students applying to the program can select one of our eight research topics (institutes). Following acceptance, individuals are assigned to a certain institute depending on their preferences. Click on the links to the department websites below to discover more about each institute and the research involved.
Students at SIMR can also participate in the bioengineering bootcamp. This is a hands-on bioengineering learning experience that does not include any lab research.
At SIMR, almost 50 students work on research projects with a Stanford mentor. Participants apply to one of eight institutions, which include Bioengineering, Immunology, Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, and others. After ranking their preferred institutes on their application, students will repeat the procedure for the list of professors hosting space in their laboratories and the possibilities for available research projects. They can also attend a bioengineering boot camp; the distinction is that the second option does not involve a laboratory component. Students in this option attend lectures three days per week and work in groups of 4-5 on a biodesign project to address a medical issue. Following the event, the research teams present their findings.
