Rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders from throughout the country participate in a one-of-a-kind summer adventure in the Rocky Mountains during the HMI Summer Term. Over two backpacking journeys, they realize their best selves by testing the limits of their ability and learning how to lead others. Students establish their voices, refine their language, and get experience with college-level writing via a series of writing workshops, eventually creating a polished essay that can be used for college applications or as a captivating personal statement.
Students learn how to traverse and flourish in Colorado’s rough terrain on two 10-day camping adventures. HMI’s objective is centered on leadership and communication philosophy; in addition to wilderness skills, students exercise leadership skills and learn how to work and communicate with individuals from all backgrounds. They graduate from the Summer Term equipped to succeed in high school academics, sports teams, and as leaders in extracurricular activities.
On campus, students delve into the art of the personal essay, receiving guidance and comments from experienced writers. Each student will have the opportunity to write a thoughtful personal essay on their wilderness experiences for use as a Common Application college essay or personal statement.
