Summer Scholars program at Clemson University welcomes hundreds of campers who enjoy a one-week introduction to a variety of university learning options, while being immersed in our campus culture.
Length: 1 week duration
Age: Rising 7th through 12th graders are eligible.
While Clemson’s SSP alternatives are only available for one week, the experience is equally as hands-on and engaging as the other options on our list. Students spend the morning immersed in a specific topic taught by highly skilled and experienced Clemson faculty members. They may meet with admissions staff and other campus representatives in the afternoons to learn more about the college experience. Unlike other programs that extend learning opportunities into the evening, Clemson encourages participants to participate in activities that their students like, such as swimming, bowling, and cookouts.
Course examples: The courses provided change from year to year. Recent courses at Clemson include Engineering Design, Human Oncology and Pathogenesis, CSI, and Genetic Horizons: Mutations Happen. Students become forensic scientists in CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). They learn how to identify deceased victims from crime scenes using DNA fingerprinting, hair and blood analysis, and face reconstruction.
During the day, students will participate in hands-on, intensive classes in their chosen subject taught by Clemson faculty. Afternoons are free to explore campus, take a campus tour, or meet with an Admissions or Clemson University Honors College representative. Evenings involve a variety of recreational activities popular among Clemson students, such as bowling at The Underground, swimming at Fike Recreation Center, a presentation at the planetarium, games on Bowman Field, and a week-end party.
