Calvin University offers a range of pre-college services and programs, spanning from minority-awarded for-credit on-campus scholars programs to SAT and ACT tutoring to an international summer immersion academy (to be launched), and the beloved summer career explorations program.
The Summer Career Explorations Program offers high school students a practical, hands-on week of career-focused work, in which they can discover and delve into a field of study of potential interest just like a college student, on Calvin’s campus.
Program structure:
- In the mornings, students will attends hands-on sessions led by Calvin faculty
- Job site visits and career workshop centers will expose students to professionals in the chosen field of study
- The overnight experience will introduce students to Calvin’s dorm life and prepare them for the college experience to come
Program options:

- History ~ Prof. Katherine van Liere: Students will learn about careers pertaining to museums, archives, and criminal justice, visit the Grand Rapids Public Museum, meet professional historians, and contribute to a collaborative class blog based on interviews and research
- Nursing and Pre-Health ~ Prof. Adejoke Ayoola: This program will explore nursing both in clinical and community work settings, including a tour of campus facilities (Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex, nursing simulation lab) and a local hospital (Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital)
